Qualifications: BSc (Hons), MBChB (Commendation), MD (Hons), FRCPath, FRCPA, FRCP, FRSB, FAcadMEd, FAHMS
Alastair joined Newcastle University as a Senior Lecturer in Pathology and Honorary Consultant Histopathologist. He was promoted to a personal Chair in Hepatopathology in 1995 and then the established Chair of Pathology in 1998. He became Dean of Clinical Medicine at the University of Newcastle in 2005.
In January 2013, he took up the post of Dean of Medicine at the University of Adelaide. The following year, he became Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. At the beginning of March 2019, after completing his term of office as Executive Dean at the University of Adelaide, he was appointed Emeritus Professor and continues to supervise PhD students there. Since returning to the UK, he undertook consultancy work for pharmaceutical companies and then was appointed to the new and exciting post of Professor of Precision and Molecular Pathology at Newcastle University from 1st November 2019. From early 2020 Alastair became the Director of NovoPath – Newcastle MRC Node.
